The Vegetarian Athlete: Is it for you?

What do pro-cyclist Christine Vardaros, tennis champion Martina Navratilova, and Olympic Gold Medalist Carl Lewis all have in common?  They follow a meat-free diet.  And as vegetarians, they were still able to reap the rewards of a successful athletic career.

There are many reasons why people would choose to exclude meat and other animal products from their diets.  From the health benefits to ethical concerns and economic reasons to religious beliefs, whatever the motivation, those who exclude meat from their diets should be better prepared to meet their protein needs with a well-balanced diet.   Therefore, it is important to have a good understanding of protein sources and how to fuel properly without relying on supplementation.

Welcome to Current Nutrition in Sport and Exercise!

Thank you for landing your computer on a new online community geared towards athletes looking to improve, build, or support their current nutritional goals.  Whether you are looking to add another level of complexity to your current diet or thinking of a complete overhaul to your food choices this is a great place to start.

What do I mean by athletes?   Novices, juniors, masters, or the elite athlete will fit the bill for this site.  No matter what your skill or experience everyone needs to maintain their nutritional health.  And unless you are an elite or professional athlete with a degree in nutrition, most everyone could use a little direction now and then. Although, even with a doctorate in nutrition, I seek advice from my colleagues on what smart diet choices to help improve my fitness performance.  So in the end, it shows that we are all continuing to learn, improve and tweak are current needs so that it helps us get to where we want to be – over the finish line (and preferably the 1st one!).

All the best,

Rose Giordano, PhD,  Founder of CNSE
